Listen, I’m a big fan of fireflies. Their natural luciferase enzyme lets me conduct experiments in plant genetics. Also, have you ever looked at a firefly up close? They’re adorable.  This diagram, from a Popular Mechanics feature, will help you ID fireflies in your backyard. If you become good enough at identifying the species, you can sign up for the Museum of Science’s ‘Firefly Watch‘ citizen science project, which aims to track what appears to be declining firefly populations across the country.
